Garden Diary 2015

New Plants Plants from the following species were introduced to the garden in 2015: Apiaceae family, Campanula, Ferns, Euphorbia, Geranium, Kniphofia, Penstemon, Phlox, Phytolacca, Podophyllum, Rose, Salvia, Veratrum.

Jobs completed

  • Plunge bed plants sorted

  • Removed ivy on wall above plunge bed cage

  • Rosa Zephirine Drouhin planted to train against wall in new seating area

  • Ferns divided and re-positioned

  • Euphorbia bed - new plantings

  • Plants in pots. Podophyllum Spotty Dotty, Sempervivum, various bulbs, Narcissi, Pelargoniums

  • Poppy Bed cleared and initial stages of new design commenced (to rename The Display Bed)

  • Remaining plants cleared from Display Bed and a few plants put in

  • Clematis Perle d'Azur moved

  • Decided to leave Clematis Pagoda in situ

  • Baptisia australis moved to back has not grown so small plant at front left in situ.

  • One new support for Clematis tangutica erected

  • Running grass removed from bed

Conservation Plant - Rodgersia podophylla ‘Instow’ propagated x3 (one requested and supplied to Great Dixter)

Routine Maintenance and other tasks (happen every year)

  • Paths treated with weed killer twice a year

  • Paths weeded and raked

  • Hedge cutting

  • Garden waste removed to far end of staff car park

  • Repeated forking over soil to remove allium seedlings

  • Hoeing, weekly

  • Checking potted plants for condition and weeding

  • Deadheading and cutting back at the end of the season

  • Photography - plants identified, photographs uploaded to internet

  • Labelling of plants

  • Bench seats and tables stowed away for winter, replaced in spring

  • Hoses disconnected, taps opened to protect over winter.

  • Rock salt applied to brick path inside and outside gate to prevent slips and falls


We had some new Volunteers in 2015 - we welcome them to our garden and Group.


  • Colour poster designed and produced for display in the garden.

  • Greetings cards featuring photos from the Garden for sale on Sundays and at other events

  • Facebook and Social media feature events e.g. Plant Sale days and photographic record of garden.

Maintenance and Admin Projects completed

  • New Main Gates and Courtyard Gate supplied by Park Staff

  • Fittings to gate completed

  • Bothy painted, new shelving, worktop, lighting and clock fitted

  • Bench seats restored, table made for new seating area

  • Capstones on low wall repointed

  • Repairs to netting on plunge beds

  • New brass four way tap and connectors installed to water tap

  • Cupboard obtained for top shed - organised and labelled to contain equipment for Sunday opening sessions

  • New guidelines and procedures introduced for Sunday Volunteers

  • Database updated, historic records added

  • Our Wollaton Garden goes by different names, suggesting we might be caring for two gardens. After consultation, it was agreed it should be referred to as ‘The Botanic Garden’.
